I finished watching the series recently, ending
on episode 13 named Lazarus. The mystery of the Drake was revealed in this last episode. I did figure out part of the mystery at around mid season but there are indeed some plot twist in the show which I did not see coming.
There will be spoilers ahead as I try to figure out what exactly happened in the show.
So in the early days of the Drake, Harlan Moore (Richard Short) and his friends have invited in a demon to the Drake. The demon would give them wealth and riches in return if they present to him the souls of the people. And that must be what Harlan Moore and his friends were doing to keep themselves rich and the Drake in such good condition.
Fast forward to the present, Gavin Doran (Terry O'Quin) now runs the Drake. He too knows the secret and also does his part in trying to get souls for the demon. How he does it was that he grants the deepest wishes of his residence at the Drake at a very high price, their soul. But he does not tell them that. Throughout the show, all of the residence who did the trade died shortly in one way or another. I am not sure however, how Harlan Moore and his friends get the souls in the past as according to Harlan who was 117 years old but still look like his is in his 40s, told Mr Doran that Mr Doran had taken the Drake away from his and was using those cheap methods to get hold of the souls. So I wonder what method did Harlan use back in the past for souls.
The 'legacy' of the Drake will be continued on by Jane Van Veen, who was revealed to be the biological daughter of Mr Doran. Shocker isn't it? I still thought that she was one of the good guys! Apparently, that is what wealth and riches can do to people. After she got into this 'business' with her dad, she began leading a really successful life. Good husband, successful career.. Everything anyone could have ever wanted. It was also towards the end where she revealed to her husband Henry, that she is pregnant. And this child, as according to Mr Doran will be a great leader where everybody would bow to his command. It actually sounds kind of ominent to me. Definitely not good.
There was one character in the show however, that I feel that they should develop more. And she is Nona Clark (Samantha Logan). Nona Clark was seen helping Jan uncover the mystery of the Drake and even referred to themselves as 'the Children of the Drake'. But towards the end, the spotlight was directed to the much more important character of Detective Cooper, a member of the Illuminati, who is the good guys in this show. They were trying to stop the evil Harlan. Although the character of Nona Clark dim in terms of importance to Detective Cooper, I still feel that they could give more attention to her. Tell us what has she been up to. Especially the scene whereby she was sorting through the newspaper articles on residence of the Drake and also holding on to Jane's necklace. Is she still one of the good guys? And is she still figuring out the mystery of the Drake?
