The White House

The White House is located in Washington, D.C., and was built between 1792 and 1800. It has been the executive residence of every U.S. President since John Adams (Second President of the United States).

The architecture of the White House was chosen in a competition by George Washington, the First President of the United States himself. The proposal he selected was submitted by James Hoban, a man of Irish decent who resides in Charleston, South Carolina.

Thomas Jefferson (Third President of the United States) was the first president to open the White House for public tours. The tour of the White House is free of charge. The route in which visitors are allowed to roam would mainly be the ground floor corridor, the Library, and then up through the stairs to the State floor and through the East, Green, Blue, Red and State Dining rooms and finally exit via the north portico lobby.

The White House takes up about 5100 m^2 of floor space and is about 52 m long and 26 m tall. The construction of the White House started in 13 October 1792 and was completed in 01 November 1800. It was later rebuilt in 1817.
